This is the best simple green smoothie recipe because it's healthy, vegan and so easy to make. In addition, it is perfect for beginners, an energizing breakfast alternative, and versatile!
Green smoothies are certainly a simple way to sneak more greens into your everyday morning routine. I have been making this vegan smoothie, smoothie bowl, or my detox green juice recipe for years since it's a quick and healthy breakfast!
Some green smoothie recipes can be too complicated so this is a perfect base. It is great for beginners since you can start simple and then add more ingredients as you like.
WHY DRINK GREEN SMOOTHIES
I drink green smoothies daily because I like having a veggie-packed breakfast. They are perfect for breakfast because they are healthy, delicious, and will keep you energized all day!
Even when you are in a rush in the mornings, it is so easy to make a green smoothie and then take it to go. It will also save you money and time since you don't have to stop anywhere to get breakfast in the morning.
When you add simple fruits, you don't even taste the greens. You can also add more fruits for sweetness or change up some of the ingredients like my blueberry avocado smoothie. If you are looking for a more indulgent treat, you can try my vegan strawberry milkshake smoothie!
Before we jump into the recipe, let's talk about how you can customize it and learn some tips.
How to Make a Simple Green Smoothie
Ingredients
Spinach
Fresh baby spinach works great in this dairy-free smoothie but you can sub for baby kale. You can also use frozen spinach if you prefer.
Frozen Bananas
When you add frozen bananas, it will make your smoothie sweet, creamy, and also cold. You can try to sub for another frozen fruit but it may not be as creamy.
Plant-based milk or water
Most of the time I use water as the liquid but feel free to use plant-based milk instead. You can try it with my homemade oat milk, almond or cashew milk, or just use store-bought.
Apple
I like using green apples but you can use your favorite type of apple. You can also sub for another favorite fruit if you are not a fan of apples.
Avocado
My secret to making very creamy green smoothies is to add a little bit of avocado. You don't really taste the avocado but it makes is so creamy and delicious!
Frozen Blueberries (optional)
After reading Medical Medium's book, I also started adding frozen wild blueberries. Frozen berries are also a great way to save money since fresh berries can be very expensive.
You can also sub for regular frozen blueberries or omit it. Adding berries will make your smoothie not as green but it will make it delicious!
How to make it step by step
- First, wash the fresh ingredients and chop the apple. And then you can add all the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until very smooth.
GREEN SMOOTHIE TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
It is very easy to make a delicious and healthy green smoothie but there are some things to keep in mind when you first start.
HOW TO MAKE IT CREAMY
Avocado and banana will make it very creamy so keep that in mind. If you want it to be even creamier, you can add a little more avocado but make sure that it is ripe.
Simple green smoothie recipe variations
Since it is customizable, you can change up the ingredients and use your favorite fruits. Try adding frozen strawberries, raspberries, kiwi, oranges, or papaya to change the flavors.
Also, make sure that the bananas are very ripe and freeze them ahead of time. You can cut them in half and then freeze them in reusable freezer bags.
WHAT ARE SUPERFOOD ADD-INS
Another great way to boost up your vegan green smoothie is to add superfoods. I love adding maca powder, cacao powder, red rishi mushroom powder, and moringa powder.
But you don't need to incorporate the add-ins to make a delicious and nutritious green smoothie. You should start slow and add 1 superfood at a time if you are a beginner since it will change the taste.
WHAT ARE THE BEST GREENS TO ADD
Since some leafy greens can be a little bitter at first, I recommend using baby greens when you are a beginner. Baby spinach has a mild flavor so you will not taste it in the green smoothie as much.
Baby spinach is a great green to start with and after you are used to it, you can alternate between baby kale and spinach.
This simple green smoothie recipe is so easy and quick to make. It's also:
- Creamy
- Healthy breakfast alternative
- Customizable
- Vegan & gluten-free
- And delicious!
