Today, I will show you how to make a smoothie bowl that is creamy, thick, healthy and so easy to make! In addition, this peanut butter banana smoothie bowl is vegan, simple, dairy-free, uses 3 ingredients, and takes less than 3 minutes to make!
Smoothie bowls are a great breakfast alternative because you can pack so many healthy ingredients! They are also cold and refreshing in the summer months.
I usually drink a green smoothie or a blueberry avocado smoothie for breakfast but to change things up, I also like to make it into a bowl. This recipe is similar to my banana ice cream recipe because of the soft-serve texture.
Before we jump into the recipe, let's talk about how you can customize it and learn some tips.
What is a Smoothie Bowl
So, smoothie bowls are essentially thicker smoothies. Instead of a liquid texture, they are a thick blend of frozen fruit, veggies, superfoods, and also topped with healthy toppings.
They contain more fruit but less liquid so they are like soft-serve ice cream. You can eat it with a spoon which makes them a great meal.
How to Make a Smoothie Bowl that is Vegan
It is important to use ripe frozen bananas for this recipe so it will be sweet and creamy. I always have bananas on the counter and when they are ripe, I cut them and place them in the freezer. You can also use reusable freezer bags to store the bananas in the freezer.
Peanut butter gives such a great taste to this smoothie bowl but you can swap it for almond butter or cashew butter if you like. Also, if you want a nut-free version, you can use sunflower butter instead.
How to make it
All you have to do is add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy! If you don't have a high-speed blender, you may need additional liquid to blend everything smoothly.
Tips & Variations
- If you want to add chocolate flavor, you can add a tablespoon of cacao powder in the blender.
- You can also top the smoothie bowl with superfoods such as hemp seeds, flaxseeds, and goji berries.
- Add some leafy greens in the blender to make it even healthier. you can use baby kale, spinach or another green you like.
- Add more tropical fruits as a topping or keep it simple and use strawberries or blueberries.
How do you thicken a Smoothie Bowl
When you add banana, it will naturally thicken your smoothie bowl but you should make sure to use less liquid. If you want to thicken the smoothie bowls more you can add ¼ of an avocado. You won't really taste the avocado but it will make it thicker and creamier.

- 2 frozen bananas
- 2 tbsp peanut butter
- ⅓ cup to ½ cup choice of plant-based milk (adjust as needed according to the consistency)
- Add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
- Transfer the smoothie into a bowl and add toppings.
