This dairy free and egg free tartar sauce is made with homemade vegan mayo (aquafaba), fresh dill, and also dill pickle! If you don’t want to make your own vegan mayo, you can use store-bought as well.
When you buy tartar sauce in the store, it can be very expensive so it’s best to make it at home. You will know the ingredients and also tastes way better than store-bought!
Before we jump into the recipe, let’s talk about how you can customize it and learn some tips.
Can vegans eat tartar sauce?
Traditional recipes usually call for mayonnaise so it contains eggs. Since we will be using vegan mayo, it will be vegan friendly!
How to make vegan tartar sauce
I make homemade mayo from aquafaba so that’s what I use. You can also buy vegan mayonnaise at the store.
Since capers have a salty and tangy flavor, we will be adding some. I think capers provide enough salt so I didn’t add extra salt but you can add some if needed.
Freshly squeezed lemon juice gives this sauce a tangy flavor so I don’t recommend omitting it. I don’t recommend using a bottle version either because I don’t think it tastes fresh.
Raw onion can be overpowering so we will use onion powder. It provides the onion taste and also gives some depth to the flavors.
Another ingredient that provides a little tangy flavor but gives depth. You can also sub for dijon mustard if you prefer.
Fresh dill and dill pickle
Finely chopped fresh dill gives so much flavor so I don’t recommend subbing for dried dill. We will also add a dill pickle because it provides a great crunch.
How to make homemade vegan tartar sauce from scratch
- All you have to do is to add all the ingredients in a bowl and then mix well. But always adjust to taste and make the adjustment if needed!
- After mixing, place it in the fridge for an hour so it will be cold and get thicker.
- Chop the ingredients small or keep it bigger for a chunky texture.
- Always adjust to taste and add salt if needed!
How to serve vegan tartar sauce
- Dip fishless crab cakes, fish sticks or vegan potato cakes
- Eat with fish and chips
- Add it to sandwiches or wraps
How to store it
You can store it in the fridge, covered, for up to 5 days. When it gets colder, it will also get thicker.

- 3/4 cup homemade vegan mayo ( sub for store-bought)
- 4 tbs chopped dill pickle
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1 1/2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp capers (chopped)

- 1 tsp brown mustard (sub for dijon)
